We need to start talking about it.

whose Right is it anyway? is a workshop that aims to raise awareness, understanding and discussion of human rights among youths. In a nutshell, we aim to focus on the everyday-life aspects of human rights and understanding things from a rights-based perspective. This targets specifically the common (mis)conception that human rights is a high-level discussion that as little practical value – something prevalent and worth re-exploring.

We feel that more could be done to raise the basic knowledge of human rights among youths, thus whose Right is it anyway? can thus be considered as a first-of-its-kind attempt at human rights education among youths. This programme has been specially designed by MARUAH, a local human rights advocacy group.

The morning will host a variety of speakers to speak on several aspects on human rights, to set the understanding of how human rights actually does creep into everyday situations and how rights are being reflected in society and how we can move from there.  This will be followed by a 30-minute Q&A session where controversial .

The afternoon consists of small-group breakout sessions, where participants will interact with each other to learn and discuss about rights. There is a progressive element to this: first we begin discussing about the rights we are entitled to [My Rights], then we talk how others have rights too but at different levels of access [Your Rights], and finally we move on to the more complex nature of how each others’ actions can affect each others’ rights [Our Rights]. Each activity starts with a short game, followed by discussions related to the game that will be facilitated by trained volunteers.

We hope that through this one-day workshop, youths will have a more thorough conception of what human rights really is about, and understand its highly complex character in the realm of its application. We seek to address fundamental questions about human rights, and provide a foundational knowledge of how to approach and apply basic human rights concepts. We also hope that youths will begin to start talking about human rights in their own way and own spaces.
